Can a Humanoid Robot Make Coffee? RoboBarista and Unitree G1 Explained

Humanoid robot barista making coffee in a café

Say “robot barista” and most people picture a robot arm working inside a glass kiosk. A different approach is gaining ground: put a humanoid robot behind the counter and let it use the café’s existing espresso machine. RoboBarista, available from Robots Europa, is that approach turned into a product.

This guide covers whether a humanoid can make coffee, how RoboBarista works, which robot to pair it with and what a European café should consider.

Can a humanoid robot really make coffee?

Yes, with one condition. Beyond hardware, the robot needs software that directs it. Holding the portafilter, dosing from the grinder, locking it into the group head, steaming milk and placing the cup are all separate motions that must be programmed. To do them safely and repeatably, the robot must check its own movements against what its cameras see.

That is why the humanoid must be open to secondary development through an SDK. Closed basic versions cannot run this kind of software; we explain the difference in our guide to SDK access.

How RoboBarista works

RoboBarista is the barista software in the RoboSuite family. It does not sell a separate coffee machine; it lets the robot use the venue’s own espresso machine, grinder and milk equipment, so the equipment you have calibrated and the taste your customers know stay the same.

1Drink profiles

Espresso, americano, flat white, batch brew and iced drinks are defined as profiles with steps, quantities and finishing touches. The robot runs each profile the same way from the first cup to the four hundredth. Menu changes are added by staff as configuration.

2Vision-verified service

Before every drink, the robot checks with its camera that a cup is present, the right cup is chosen and it is in position. The aim is to stop spills and wrong orders before they reach the customer.

3Safety stop

Motion stops when a hand enters the robot’s work area. Tasks involving hot equipment use deliberate, verified steps.

4Service log

Every drink is logged by profile and time. Data on the morning rush, lunchtime lull and afternoon dip can feed staff and stock planning.

According to the product page, the software carries a 12-month warranty and pricing is quoted by number of stations and fleet size. Buyers without a robot can request the robot and software together.

Which humanoid robot to choose

RoboBarista is designed to run on robots from different manufacturers as long as they support secondary development; the product page lists brands such as Unitree, AgiBot, UBTECH, PUDU and EngineAI.

Unitree G1 EDU is a practical platform behind a counter at about 132 cm, with a depth camera, 3D LiDAR and dexterous hand options. Hands such as the Dex3-1 three-fingered hand matter for gripping a portafilter and milk jug. R1 EDU is a lower-cost start, but check its height and hand options against a standard counter first.

A barista that speaks your guests’ language

In a European city café, guests may speak several languages in one morning. Many robots ship with only English and Chinese. RoboLingua adds language-model-based conversation to robots open to secondary development, licensed per language, with more than 50 languages available. The robot accompanies speech with head and arm gestures. The product page notes that voice quality is highest in widely spoken languages, so test your languages in a demo.

Limits and practical considerations

Be realistic about speed. A humanoid may not match an experienced barista at peak times. The model works best where coffee is part of the show, customers watch it being made and the robot itself is the attraction: flagship stores, airports, hotel lobbies and corporate campuses.

Battery life must be planned too. Humanoids work between charging cycles, so full-day service needs spare batteries or a shift plan. Food hygiene stays with the venue’s own HACCP-based procedures under EU food hygiene rules; the software is designed to operate within those procedures, not replace them.

For evening service, the same family’s RoboTender is covered in our robot bartender guide.

What to ask for in a quote

Share your espresso machine make and model, your menu, expected cups per day, counter dimensions and the languages the robot should speak. In return, confirm the robot and hand options, setup and profile configuration support, training, warranty and spare batteries.

Delivery, VAT and CE for EU buyers are covered in our guide to buying a robot in Europe.

Which robots does RoboBarista run on?

Robots open to secondary development. The product page lists brands such as Unitree, AgiBot, UBTECH, PUDU and EngineAI. Closed basic versions are not supported.

How many coffees can a humanoid robot barista make?

The product page does not give a fixed figure, and speed depends on the robot, equipment and menu. A demo or pilot is the best way to measure capacity.
