Robot Dogs Explained: What They Are, What They Do and What They Cost (2026)

Robot dogs explained cover with Deep Robotics Lite3 Pro

A robot dog is a four-legged walking robot. Engineers call it a quadruped. It uses electric motors in each leg, cameras and depth sensors to see the ground, and onboard software to keep its balance on stairs, grass and gravel. The name stuck because the shape and the way it trots look like a dog, but the jobs these machines do range from family entertainment to gas-leak inspection on oil platforms.

This guide explains how robot dogs work, which types exist, what they can and cannot do, and what they cost in 2026. Prices are list prices from the Robots stores, checked on 16 October 2026. We compare models from published manufacturer and distributor information, not from our own lab tests.

What is a robot dog?

A robot dog is a legged mobile robot with four limbs, usually with three motors per leg: one at the hip that swings the leg sideways, one that swings it forward and back, and one at the knee. Twelve motors working together let it walk, trot, climb steps and get back up after a fall. Wheels are faster on flat floors, but legs can step over cables, kerbs and rubble, which is why legged robots exist at all.

The best-known example is Boston Dynamics Spot, which made the idea famous in viral videos. Today most robot dogs sold worldwide come from Chinese makers such as Unitree, Deep Robotics, Galileo, MagicLab and Dobot, and they cost far less than Spot.

How robot dogs work

Three systems do most of the work.

1Motors and legs

Each joint has a compact electric actuator with a gearbox and an encoder that reports its angle hundreds of times per second. Stronger motors mean a heavier payload and better recovery when the robot slips. Industrial models such as the Unitree B2 can carry tens of kilograms; consumer models are built to carry a few.

2Sensors

Cameras, depth sensors and, on higher models, LiDAR give the robot a 3D picture of what is in front of it. An inertial measurement unit (IMU) tells it which way is down. Foot contact sensing tells it when each foot touches the ground. We cover the options in detail in our robot dog sensors guide.

3Control software

A balance controller runs in a fast loop and decides how much torque each motor should apply. On top of that sit navigation, obstacle avoidance, follow-me modes, voice commands and, on developer versions, an SDK that lets you write your own behaviours in Python or C++, often with ROS 2.

Types of robot dogs

Robot dogs split into four practical groups. The group matters more than the brand because it decides price, toughness and what you are allowed to program.

Consumer€1,800 to €5,500Hobbyists, families, content creators, showroomsUnitree Go2 Air, FX Navi, Dobot Rover X1

What robot dogs can do

  • Industrial inspection: reading gauges, checking temperatures with thermal cameras and listening for leaks on routes people walk less often. See what robot dogs actually do in factories.
  • Security patrols: night rounds around car parks, warehouses and campuses, streaming video to a control room. Our security patrol robots guide compares the options.
  • Research and teaching: legged locomotion, reinforcement learning and navigation are hot topics, and a robot dog is a real platform students can program.
  • Public safety: police and fire services use them to look inside buildings or tunnels before sending people in.
  • Events and marketing: robot dogs draw crowds at trade fairs and retail openings. Renting can be cheaper than buying; see renting vs buying a robot for events.
  • Companionship and fun: consumer models follow you, dance, respond to voice and carry a phone camera, but they are not a replacement for a real pet.

AI robot dogs

Almost every new robot dog now advertises AI. In practice it means three different things. First, the walking itself is often trained with reinforcement learning in simulation, which is why newer models recover from slips better than older ones. Second, vision models recognise people, obstacles and stairs. Third, some models connect a large language model so you can talk to the robot and give spoken commands.

The useful question is not whether a robot dog has AI but whether you can use it. Consumer versions expose AI through the app. Developer versions, such as Go2 EDU or FX Aegis EDU, give access to the onboard computer so you can run your own models.

Robot dogs vs robotic pet toys

Search results for robot dogs mix two very different products. Toy robot dogs cost €30 to €150, roll on wheels or shuffle on plastic legs and respond to a few touch or voice commands. Pet-style robots such as Sony aibo focus on personality and emotional responses rather than terrain. Quadruped robots like the ones in this guide are mobile robots with real balance control that can walk outdoors.

If you are an adult looking for a real robot rather than a toy, start with a consumer quadruped such as the Unitree Go2 Air or FX Aegis. They cost more than a toy but less than many e-bikes.

How much does a robot dog cost?

Price depends almost entirely on the group. Here is what the Robots catalogue lists in October 2026:

ModelGroupList price
FX NaviConsumer€1,826
Dobot Rover X1Consumer€2,111
Unitree Go2 AirConsumer€2,174

Budget for more than the robot itself. Spare batteries, a charger, a carry case and, for industrial work, sensor payloads and integration can add 10 to 40 percent. Our commercial robot costs guide breaks this down.

Can you buy a robot dog?

Yes. Consumer and most education models can be ordered by private buyers online. Industrial models are usually sold to companies, often with a quote, training and service contract. Robots runs regional stores for Europe, the USA, Canada, Latin America, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and Africa, and the links in this guide open the store for your region automatically.

Before you order, check delivery time (many models ship to order), warranty and who repairs the robot in your country. Our robot warranty and support checklist and battery shipping guide cover the details. For a full list of models on sale, see robot dogs for sale.

Frequently asked questions

What is a robot dog?

A robot dog is a four-legged walking robot (a quadruped) that uses motors, cameras and balance software to walk, climb stairs and carry sensors. Uses range from entertainment to industrial inspection and security.

How much does a robot dog cost?

Consumer robot dogs start at about €1,800 to €2,200. Education and developer versions cost about €9,000 to €18,000, and industrial models such as Deep Robotics X30 or Unitree B2 cost about €57,000 to €79,000 (Robots list prices, October 2026).

What is the best robot dog for adults?

For an adult who wants a real robot rather than a toy, Unitree Go2 Air or Go2 Pro and FX Aegis are the most practical choices. Developers should look at Go2 EDU or Deep Robotics Lite3 Pro for SDK access.

Are robot dogs AI?

Most new robot dogs use AI for walking control and object recognition, and some connect a language model for voice commands. Full access to AI features for your own code usually requires an EDU or developer version.

How much is Boston Dynamics Spot?

Spot is sold directly by Boston Dynamics to businesses and is widely reported to cost around USD 75,000 for the base robot. Industrial alternatives such as Deep Robotics X30 and Unitree B2 cost less in most configurations.

Can a robot dog replace a real dog?

No. Robot dogs can follow you, play and respond to commands, but they do not provide the companionship of a living animal. They are useful as tech products, teaching tools and work machines.
